Vincent grew up amid the windswept dunes of the Landes, a skinny shepherd boy guiding his father's flock across barren heath. Though his neighbors doubted his future, his sharp mind and unwavering spirit caught the eye of a local lawyer who sent him to a Franciscan school and later hired him as a tutor for his children. Those early years of teaching and study opened a path from the fields to the halls of university, where Vincent earned a degree while supporting himself through private tutoring.
When he finally received holy orders, Vincent chose silence over ceremony, celebrating his first Mass alone in a remote woodland chapel. The modest setting reflected his deep desire to serve without seeking reward or prestige. Even then, his commitment to charity and humility hinted at the extraordinary compassion that would define his later work.
