INTRODUCTORY NOTE
LIFE IS A DREAM
ACT I
SCENE I—A pass of rocks, over which a storm is rolling away, - and the sun setting: in the foreground, half-way down, a fortress.
SCENE II.—The Palace at Warsaw
ACT II
SCENE I—A Throne-room in the Palace. Music within.
ACT III.
SCENE I.—The Tower, etc., as in Act I. Scene I.
A storm‑racked mountain pass frames the play’s opening, where a lone rider in men’s garb—Rosaura—struggles against fierce winds and jagged rock. Her companion, the loyal attendant Fife, offers a grim commentary as the landscape seems to mirror the turbulence within the royal court below. In the shadows of a looming fortress, King Basilio of Poland and his court prepare to confront a succession dispute that threatens to upend the kingdom’s fragile order.
From this tempest‑laden beginning, the drama unfolds into a meditation on reality and illusion, asking whether life itself is merely a fleeting dream. The young prince Segismund, torn between duty and destiny, becomes the focal point of philosophical intrigue, while the surrounding characters—generals, nobles, and a mysterious Muscovite lady—add layers of loyalty, honor, and hidden desire. Calderón weaves vivid poetry with stark action, inviting listeners to ponder the weight of power and the fragile line between waking and imagined worlds.
