Description

In a quiet Parisian quarter, ten‑year‑old Alcée is the beloved son of a kindly Alsatian colour‑merchant. With his blond hair and gentle manners, he is a favourite among the neighbours and looks every bit the little angel that his parents adore. Each year the family prepares for the festive “little Christmas” tradition, filling their home with gifts and stories that keep Alcée’s imagination alive.

On the night before the celebration, Alcée awakens to a faint glow from the chimney and discovers that a strange, shadowy figure with a green moustache has slipped into his room. The figure rummages through his prized toys and newly‑acquired books, vanishing as silently as it arrived, leaving behind only a lingering smell of pipe smoke. When his parents find the mess, they try to soothe the shaken boy with a gold coin, but the tale of the green‑moustached stranger spreads through the neighbourhood, sowing a mix of wonder and dread among the other parents.

Tristan Bernard

1866–1947

Best known for sparkling boulevard comedies and dry, memorable wit, this French writer brought a light touch to plays, novels, and journalism. His work skewered everyday vanity and middle-class habits without ever losing its sense of fun.
