King Pausole rules the imagined realm of Tryphême with a blend of regal ceremony and playful irreverence. He dispenses justice beneath a low‑hanging cherry tree, preferring its shade to the solemnity of a palace throne, and wears a crown of thin gold‑plated aluminum that he boasts is lighter than his cousin’s heavy hat. His court teems with an eclectic parade of queens, page‑boys, gardeners and townsfolk, each introduced with a tongue‑in‑cheek description that hints at a society both absurd and oddly logical. The opening pages set a tone of witty satire, framing the king’s philosophy that “the laws of common sense are better observed where manners are scarce.”
After twenty tranquil years on the throne, Pausole awakens one June morning feeling an unexpected weight of doubt. Riding his mule Macarie through the palace grounds, he begins to question the ease of his reign and the purpose behind his whimsical decrees. Along the way he encounters characters ranging from the devoted first lady to a mischievous young girl, each promising a new episode in his journey toward self‑discovery. Their intertwined stories suggest that even a ruler of such light‑hearted confidence may soon face the genuine complexities of existence.
