Leila or, the Siege of Granada, Book IV.

In the shadow of the Sierra Nevada, the castle of Almamen braces for a sudden onslaught. News arrives that Boabdil’s forces, swelling with mountain warriors and a mysterious sorcerer waving a white banner, are sweeping through the surrounding forts. Inside the stone walls, the seasoned commander Mendo de Quexada scrambles his men, reinforcing walls and stockpiling supplies for the inevitable clash. Meanwhile, Leila, a young Jewish maiden, watches the distant domes of Granada and the approaching Moorish banners from her lofty chamber, her thoughts drifting between home and the looming danger.

The rhythmic roar of drums and the shrill blast of Moorish clarions break her reverie, and the castle awakens with hurried preparations. Women of the fortress gather around Leila, sharing whispered fears while unable to tear their eyes from the glittering spears below. As the enemy cavalry draws close, the defenders summon every ounce of courage, vowing that not a single stone will fall without a fight.
