Description

In a quiet parlor, the tension between Rebecca and her longtime fiancé Edwin crackles like a struck chord. While Rebecca’s fingers glide over the piano, her cool demeanor masks a storm of suspicion as she questions Edwin’s sudden absences and mysterious “serious business.” Their conversation spirals from polite curiosity to sharp accusations, exposing a rift rooted in differing loyalties to the tumultuous politics of their age.

Edwin’s secret mission—transporting valuable cargo to Canada—collides with Rebecca’s disdain for any involvement with the abolitionist cause, a cause she believes he secretly supports. The discovery of a newspaper article recounting a violent raid on Edwin’s family home, where escaped slaves sought refuge, deepens the conflict, forcing both lovers to confront the moral stakes of their choices. As the music swells, their relationship hangs in a precarious balance, hinting at the broader struggle between personal devotion and the fight for freedom.
