Description

Ensign Jed Grey and his blue‑furred partner, the telepathic Canopan known as Joe, step off the bus into the chaotic streets of Selby, Texas. The town swarms with a kaleidoscope of species—Terrans, Arcturians, Sirians, and other off‑world visitors—all jostling beneath neon signs that flicker against a bruised sunset. Though the crowd’s hostility bites at their nerves, the pair cling to each other, seeking a brief respite before the looming deployment.

Their search leads them to the Purple Claw, a ramshackle bar whose violet lobster sign pulses erratically above the doorway. Inside, the air is thick with tobacco, fermented tekla, and a soundtrack that fuses gritty Earth jazz with alien drumbeats. The atmosphere crackles with strained conversations, wary glances, and the promise of a night where, for a few hours, the looming war can be forgotten.
