In the winter of the 1860s a weary traveler and his ailing wife settle into the lively Fond de la Danza, a modest inn on Málaga’s bustling Plaza de los Moros. Around a communal table they share stories with a cantankerous Galician judge and the spirited Andalusian proprietress, their banter painting a vivid portrait of regional quirks and culinary debates. The atmosphere crackles with the hum of gossip, as each guest trades tales of personal fortunes and local mischief.
Amid this convivial swirl, the narrator becomes curious about the lingering echo of the 1836 Málaga uprising, a political storm that still haunts the city’s memory. A young civil servant points him toward Pepe Carmona, a reticent merchant whose quiet demeanor masks a past that brushes against both the Malaga and Barcelona massacres of that era. Their chance meeting at the casino promises a deeper dive into the tangled web of intrigue, ambition, and the restless spirit of a nation in transition.

A leading voice of Spain’s Generation of ’98, he wrote sharp, restless novels that looked hard at modern life and the people pushed to its edges. Before literature took over, he even trained and worked as a doctor for a short time.
