The story opens in a China still haunted by the loss of the Ming dynasty, where the memory of a brief, secretive reign lingers like a whispered legend. Amid the turmoil of rebel provinces and the iron grip of the Manchu rulers, a young captive girl becomes an unlikely witness to the brutal suppression of a hopeful emperor and the desperate flight of his successor. Through vivid reports from a Tartare general, the narrative sketches a landscape of endless revolt, burning palaces, and the lingering hope that a true Chinese line may yet survive.
Against this turbulent backdrop, a visionary reformer named Kan‑You‑Wey dares to imagine a peaceful reconciliation between the two warring cultures. He opens a school in Beijing, drafts a bold manifesto, and makes repeated, almost apostolic attempts to reach the secluded sovereign hidden behind four layers of palace walls. As his ideas finally reach the hidden emperor in 1898, the stage is set for a clash of ancient tradition and radical modernity, inviting listeners to explore a world where history, ambition, and the yearning for renewal intertwine.
