Description

Albert Edward Preemby is a lanky sixteen‑year‑old with his father’s dark curls and his mother’s bright eyes, growing up in the shadow of a modest laundry business in north‑London. After the death of his wife and the sudden loss of his family’s shop, he finds himself drifting between the drudgery of a coal‑trader’s office and the lingering memories of his father’s celebrated photographs. The narrative paints a vivid picture of Edward’s restless imagination, his habit of staring past textbooks toward far‑off places, and his uneasy attempt to fit into a world that expects practical skill over daydreams.

Now working as a house broker, Edward discovers a strange allure in the mechanics of renting grand homes, where tenants themselves provide the necessary energy. His keen eye for detail and a talent for vivid description earn him unexpected success, while his secret yearning for a grand commercial venture begins to take shape. The story captures the tension between ordinary labor and the pull of larger, almost fantastical ambitions, setting the stage for a journey that could reshape his modest life.

About the author

H. G. (Herbert George) Wells

H. G. (Herbert George) Wells

1866–1946

A pioneer of modern science fiction, this English writer imagined time travel, alien invasion, and invisible men with a mix of adventure and sharp social insight. His stories still feel lively because they pair big ideas with very human fears and hopes.
