Description

A bright summer morning illuminates the bustling Ranna house, where the whole village gathers for a special celebration. The air hums with chatter, the clatter of kitchen work, and the distant call of boats on the lake, all marking the arrival of the local student’s graduation. Amid the hum, the community’s pride swells, for this is the first time the household will host the entire graduating cohort.

Helmi, the house’s only daughter, stands at the centre of the festivities, her new graduate cap gleaming beside a modest bundle of fresh linens. While her parents look forward to honoring her achievement with gifts and the promise of a future husband, she feels a mix of excitement and an uneasy knot of expectation. Old friendships stir quietly—Heikki, the shy boy from the neighboring farm, still watches from the periphery, hinting at a possible path beyond the arranged match.

The story unfolds with Helmi navigating family duty, hometown customs, and her own hopes, offering a tender glimpse into a young woman’s life on the cusp of adulthood.
