In the spring of 1899, a modest farmstead in a Finnish village comes alive with the chatter of its inhabitants. The stage is simple—a timber table, a bustling hearth, benches along the walls—yet it captures the everyday rhythm of rural life. As crops falter and the specter of hunger looms, the community confronts a growing sense of unease.
At the heart of the drama are Mattila, a weary smallholder, his wife Alpertina, and their children Selma and Lauri, who each wrestle with the pull of a distant promise. Neighbors such as Ahokangas and Anna press the idea of emigration to America, a land they glimpse as a refuge from poverty. Tensions rise as the villagers debate staying to tend their ancestral soil or joining tide of Finns seeking start abroad.
The play’s dialogue weaves humor, folk songs, and the raw urgency of a community on the brink of change, offering listeners a vivid portrait of hope and fear in equal measure. Its intimate setting and timeless themes make it an engaging listening experience for anyone curious about the human side of migration.
