A sprawling caravan rolls across the barren Llanos of northern Mexico, a river of wagons, mule‑drawn sleds and a herd of antelope‑horned cattle that form a living barrier. The convoy carries whole families, miners, foremen and a handful of Opata Indigenous people, all drawn from the mining town of Arispen. Their faces range from copper‑red to lighter northern tones, united by the lure of a newly discovered gold vein.
At the front rides Pedro Vicente, a gambusino whose black eyes seem to read both the desert and the people beside him. Weeks earlier he uncovered the vein that now drives the expedition, filing a claim and trading it to the merchant houses Villanneva and Tresillian for a sizable advance. The promise of riches hangs heavy, but the harsh heat and tangled ambitions hint that the journey will test loyalties before any gold can be claimed.
