A compact collection brings together six distinct Finnish dramas, ranging from brisk one‑act comedies to lyrical verse pieces that unfold over several scenes. Each work explores everyday conflicts and mythic echoes, using dialogue and poetic rhythm to capture the mood of early twentieth‑century Finland. The volume offers listeners a taste of domestic intrigue, heroic sentiment and the stark humor of small‑town life.
The opening play sets its stage in the front hall of a stately manor, where the pompous Major Meijerhoff presides over a bustling kitchen scene. A servant named Paavo delivers a colorful monologue about a simmering broth while hinting at whispered affection for the Major’s daughter, Salla, and the tension that this secret creates. As the Major and Paavo trade barbed remarks, the audience senses a tangled mix of jealousy, pride and underlying desire that drives the characters toward an inevitable clash.
Subsequent pieces in the anthology continue this blend of sharp wit and poetic intensity, inviting listeners to experience the rich textures of Finnish theatrical tradition.

A major voice in Finnish literature at the end of the 19th century, this poet and playwright wrote with a clear love of nature, ordinary people, and national culture. Many of his bright, songlike poems lived on in popular musical settings long after his lifetime.
