In a modest farmhouse on the outskirts of Hämeenlinna, young Hanna sits alone at a table, her mind restless despite the day’s chores. The village is buzzing about an upcoming council meeting where the future of a new folk school will be debated, a cause championed by the idealistic village teacher Ville and supported by her father’s friend, Ukkola. As the prospects of education stir hope among the younger generation, the older men of the community, bound by tradition and suspicion, brace themselves to oppose the change.
Hanna’s mother, Eeva‑Priita, already envisions a pragmatic solution: a marriage proposal from the affluent landowner Kustaa, whose wealth could secure the family’s stability. The young woman, however, feels torn between duty, the desire for love, and the yearning for a brighter, more learned future for herself and her neighbors. As the decisive gathering draws near, the clash of ambition, conservatism, and personal longing promises to shape the village’s path in ways none of them yet fully comprehend.
