Description

In the waning light of a summer evening, a solitary girl named Kitty finds herself at the edge of a quiet station, eyes fixed on the thunderous night mail racing toward London. The rhythmic roar of the locomotive and the fleeting glimpse of its cargo stir a mix of fascination and melancholy that has become her nightly ritual, a small escape from the routine of village life.

When a lanky, grey‑eyed stranger named Colin Hayward appears, the moment turns from solitary observation to uneasy companionship. He is back from the city, carrying the weight of family expectations and a recent academic failure that haunts him. Their tentative walk together reveals a fragile bond forged by shared histories, whispered jokes, and a mutual sense of isolation.

The story captures the quiet drama of a rural community where the clatter of a train can ignite hope, and where two strangers—each burdened by their own past—find a brief, comforting connection beneath the glow of twilight.
