Description

Sir Peter Chillingly is a wealthy yet oddly solitary baron who spends his days wandering the rolling fields of Exmundham, pondering the weight of inheritance and the purpose of his vast estate. Though surrounded by the trappings of aristocracy, he feels a restless need for a true successor—someone who could carry forward not just his lands but his love of speculative philosophy. The legal heir, a distant cousin, proves more interested in petty disputes than in the intellectual legacy Sir Peter wishes to bequeath.

When a newborn boy arrives on the farm, Sir Peter’s world shifts from abstract contemplation to tender responsibility. He watches the infant’s quiet, solemn gaze and wonders whether this child might become the mind he has longed for. The gentle chime of church bells and the hum of summer insects provide a backdrop to his hopeful, yet uncertain, musings about the future of his lineage.
