Description

In a cramped stone room lit by the glow of a lone lamp, young Véronique pauses her piano recital as her father, Captain Audouin, listens to the howl of a relentless wind sweeping across Lorraine. The storm outside beats against the shutters, turning the modest guesthouse into a vortex of rattling doors and distant artillery‑like cracks. Through this atmospheric tableau we glimpse a family caught in the upheaval of a war that has turned quiet villages into front‑line outposts.

As the night deepens, Audouin reveals a pending inspection by a high‑ranking overseer who will decide how new fortifications are to be built—plans that could reshape the landscape and drain the region’s resources. The captain’s weary pride and Véronique’s hopeful ambition clash with the ominous clouds gathering over the Moselle, hinting at choices that will test loyalty, duty, and the fragile bond between a father and his daughter.
