Description

In the days leading up to Christmas, the spacious, festively draped hall of the Ahlfelt household hums with chatter from workers, artists, and curious guests. Louise Ahlfelt, the widowed merchant councilor’s wife, tries to keep order while her daughter Editha flits between nervous laughter and sharp wit, sparking conversations that drift from Parisian cabarets to the latest socialist ideas. A colorful cast—including a poet, a sculptor, a dapper office clerk, and various townspeople—fills the room, each bringing a slice of bohemian intrigue to the otherwise domestic setting.

The play unfolds in three acts, beginning with light‑hearted banter that reveals hidden ambitions and the tension between tradition and modernity. As the holiday approaches, the characters’ stories intersect, exposing the fragile balance between personal desire and societal expectations. Listeners will be drawn into a vivid tableau of early‑20th‑century Finnish life, where humor, art, and the looming shadow of loss mingle beneath the glow of red velvet curtains.
