Description

In a narrow, crumbling alley of a bustling city, a seven‑year‑old girl named Katy sits on a straw bed, clutching a tattered quilt and whispering for her mother who died just days before. Earlier, she had already known loss, her father perished in a storm at sea, leaving the family to flee their peaceful New England cottage for the promise of higher wages in the city. The move brings only cramped rooms, cold windows stuffed with rags, and a mother straining against exhausting work and illness.

Despite the darkness, Katy clings to small comforts—brushing a rag doll’s hair, dreaming of green fields, and finding brief kindness from a neighbor who rescues her from the alley’s gloom. She is placed with the Maloney children, whose rough lives and ragged manners clash sharply with her delicate, fair features. As she navigates this new, harsh household, the story explores her quiet bravery and the fragile hope that a better day might still be possible.
