This work offers a daring rethink of how the ancient Finnish epic can live on the stage. Its author argues that the Kalevala’s heroes already carry their own artistic weight, so a theatrical version should let them speak in their original rhythm and personality rather than be reshaped by modern conventions. The text blends thoughtful essays with concrete suggestions for staging, inviting readers to imagine a performance that stems directly from the poetry itself.
In practice the adaptation favors an almost bare‑bones setting: a symbolic forest clearing, a simple altar of branches, and a chorus of singers who become the very voices of Väinämöinen, Aino, Joukahainen and other legendary figures. Rather than realistic costumes or elaborate scenery, the emphasis is on the audience’s imagination, allowing the mythic characters to glide across the stage as living verses. The result is a fresh theatrical language that seeks to capture the original’s spiritual power while opening new possibilities for Finnish drama.
