Set during the siege of Bethulia, this four‑act historical drama immerses listeners in a world of rival gods, military might and personal destiny. In the opening camp Holofernes orders a brutal sacrifice, while the captive Ahalibama’s desperate prayers echo the fear of the besieged. A chorus of warriors and priests chant ominous hymns to Nebuchadnezzar, creating a tense atmosphere of religious conflict. From the city walls, the young Jewish widow Judith watches, her quiet resolve hinted through whispered prayers and fierce love for her people.
The music shifts between recitative, arias and choral lament, giving each character a distinct voice. Judith’s maid Abra and the high priest Osias offer counsel, while Holofernes reveals uneasy moments of doubt. Rich lyrical language and period instrumentation draw listeners into the clash of empire and faith, setting the stage for a daring act of courage that will test loyalty and cunning. The first act closes with the tension unmistakably high, inviting the audience to follow the unfolding moral battle.
