A cold, relentless clerk keeps his ledger open on the bleakest night of the year, his office a frosty island in a bustling city. The man’s name is spoken with a mixture of fear and respect; his partnership with the late Mr. Marley has left him the sole steward of a dwindling fortune. Even the winter wind seems to bend away from his doorway, as if the world itself cannot warm his heart.

When the night deepens, a strange chill spreads through the room and a faint, mournful glow appears.
