Description

In the dense pine forests of the Tomah region, a fierce clash brews between rugged, family‑run timber crews and the powerful Comas Consolidated Paper Company, which seeks to dominate the valley’s wood supply. Ward Latisan, a young and determined woodsman descended from a pioneering saw‑log baron, roams the wilds with his ax, calipers, and a relentless spirit, protecting the independent operators who have built whole communities around their trade.

When the corporate director Rufus Craig rolls into the Holeb tote road with a polished hard hat and a proposal to buy out the locals, Ward’s stubborn pride and fierce loyalty spark a heated showdown. Their confrontation sets the stage for a larger struggle over land, livelihood, and the soul of the forest itself. As the stakes rise, Ward’s resolve hints at a modern‑day crusade, echoing the bravery of a legendary heroine while the wilderness watches.

A lively Maine storyteller, journalist, and poet, his books turned the state’s woods, coast, and small-town politics into energetic fiction. He also crossed into early filmmaking, giving his career a wider reach than many regional writers of his time.
