Description

Set against the sweeping rivers and towering bluffs of the northern plains, a spirited young adventurer sets out on a pack‑train trek toward the untamed heart of the Rockies. Riding a steam‑powered boat up a winding river, he meets an old friend and catches glimpses of elk, geese and shy deer, while the promise of Yellowstone’s geysers and vast herds looms on the horizon. The opening chapters follow his restless curiosity as he balances school‑learned wisdom with the raw instincts needed for life on the trail, learning to read the land and its peoples before the true wilderness unfolds.

Soon the journey carries him into the world of the Piegan and Blackfoot tribes, where he experiences their customs, hears their stories, and joins in early hunts that test his courage and skill. Alongside seasoned cowboys and new companions, he discovers the rhythm of pack‑train life, the thrill of spotting a buffalo herd, and the quiet awe of a landscape that seems both familiar and endlessly mysterious. These early adventures lay the groundwork for a summer of discovery that will shape his view of the American West.
