In the bustling winter square of Barcelona, 1860, a chorus of voices swells as volunteers prepare to sail for the distant Rif war in Africa. Young men from towns across Catalonia, along with their mothers, widows, and even a few blind singers, mingle with seasoned patriots who speak of past battles against the French. The atmosphere crackles with a mix of hope, anxiety, and a fierce devotion to the idea of a united homeland.
At the heart of the drama stands Jaume, a determined father eager to send his sons, Jordi and the older brother, to the front, while his wife Margarida clings to the hope of keeping their family whole. Their spirited conversations reveal the generational clash between youthful idealism and the weary caution of age, as well as the tender, sometimes conflicted, love that sustains them. As a lively pas‑doble drifts from somewhere distant, the characters confront what it truly means to sacrifice for a cause that promises both glory and loss.

A writer, poet, and librettist linked to the early Catalan Renaixença, he helped bring Catalan into popular print and musical theater. His work often mixed patriotic feeling with lively stage energy, especially in pieces written around the African War of 1859–1860.
