IN MEMORY OF - THE IRISH DEAD
IRISH NATIONALITY
CHAPTER I - THE GAELS IN IRELAND
CHAPTER IIToC - IRELAND AND EUROPE - c. 100—c. 600
In this sweeping survey of Ireland’s early history, the author paints the island as a rugged frontier of Europe, its cliffs and harbours shaping a people distinct from their English neighbours. The narrative begins with the arrival of the Gaels, tracing how their language, law and customs took root while older traditions lingered in the stone forts and mountain passes. By setting the geographic and cultural stage, the book shows why Ireland’s destiny could not simply be read through the lens of British events.
The work then follows the first thousand years of relative isolation, when the island avoided Roman conquest and the migrations that reshaped the continent. It explores the emergence of the four provincial kingdoms, their economic life of cattle herding, fishing and trade across the Atlantic, and the early religious missions that linked Ireland to the wider Christian world. Listeners will gain a clear sense of how geography, language and a resilient sense of community forged an Irish national identity long before modern politics entered the picture.

1848–1929
A sharp-eyed Irish historian and nationalist, she challenged the idea that Ireland had no rich civilization of its own. Her writing and public work helped shape debates about Irish history, independence, and identity.
