Description

Set in a storm‑laden night of 1528, the story opens inside the great hall of Östråti manor, a towering stone fortress overlooking the Trondheim fjord. Servants Björn and Finn linger by the hearth, polishing rusted armor and swapping rumors about the vanished knight Knut Alfinpoika. Their idle chatter quickly turns to uneasy speculation about a haunting presence, a silent lady whose waning health and sleepless nights seem to echo a deeper dread spreading through the household.

Around them gather a colorful cast: the widowed Lady Inger, her nervous daughter Elina, a Danish knight, a law‑less Norwegian noble, and a host of servants and local farmers. As the wind rattles the ancient stone, tension builds around the ominous weapons hanging on the walls and the whispered song that haunts the villagers. Listeners are drawn into a tense tableau of loyalty, superstition, and the looming possibility of violence, all set against the stark, cold beauty of a medieval Norwegian landscape.

About the author

Henrik Ibsen

Henrik Ibsen

1828–1906

One of the great dramatists of the 19th century, this Norwegian writer helped reshape theater with plays that brought ordinary lives, moral conflict, and social pressure to the center of the stage. His work still feels strikingly modern, especially in classics like A Doll’s House, Ghosts, and Hedda Gabler.
