Description

A determined young engineer, fresh from his studies and armed with a meagre bundle of five‑dollar notes, seeks a cheap passage to the West African port of Loango. He strikes a wary bargain with Captain Luke Chilton aboard the brig Golden Hind, a shrewd trader whose distrust masks a pragmatic honesty. The deal promises a cramped cabin, scant provisions, and a chance to earn a living on a palm‑oil contract—enough to keep the narrator’s aspirations afloat.

Once the ship sets sail, the Atlantic proves unforgiving. A sudden, violent gale drives the crew toward the infamous Sargasso Sea, where tangled weeds and strange noises stir unease. Illness sets in, bringing feverish visions and a haunting cry that echoes through the night. Amid the chaos, the narrator discovers a mysterious companion—a resilient cat—that offers a sliver of comfort as he grapples with the sea’s looming mysteries and his own dwindling hope.
