In a quiet village at the foot of the Harz, Andreas Stoffel has spent his whole life surrounded by the bright song of canary‑birds. Raised in a modest farmhouse where his father toiled in the mines, he learns to cherish the tiny singers as companions through birth, loss, and solitary evenings. When tragedy strikes and his parents pass, the birds become his only comfort, their melodies hinting at distant hopes.
Encouraged by a prosperous uncle in New York, Andreas decides to trade his cherished birds for a chance at a new life across the ocean. The prospect of reuniting with his childhood sweetheart, Christine, and the promise of a brighter future drive him to sell his home and set out for America. As the journey begins, the gentle chirps of his canaries carry both memory and longing, setting the tone for a tale of love, ambition, and the courage to start anew.
