In the dry, bright expanses of New Mexico a Boston heiress, her genteel aunt, and a Philadelphia uncle board a luxurious Pullman car, each drawn by the promise of fresh western air. Grace Winthrop, with her blond curls and Emerson‑filled mind, drifts between mountain vistas and quiet reading, while her aunt savors the comfort of pillows and her uncle dozes, dreaming of Philadelphia clubs. The landscape rolls past, a backdrop of brown peaks that seem to promise both beauty and danger.
When the train briefly halts at a modest way‑station, a broad‑shouldered stranger in corduroy and a wide‑brimmed hat steps aboard, his cartridge‑filled belt and revolver marking him as a desperado. Grace’s heart quickens, mistaking his presence for the robbery she half‑expected, while her uncle awakens, cigar in hand, to assess the new intrusion. The encounter sets a tense tone, hinting at a clash between cultivated society and the wild lawlessness of the frontier.
