Description

In the quiet village of Warburton, a rector turns his modest garden into a living notebook of Cheshire's countryside. He describes the light, sandy soil that supports holly, rhododendron, yew, and a scattering of ancient oaks and birches, while noting the occasional surprise of a zig‑zagging spruce. The introduction also laments the encroaching industry that threatens to replace fields and birdsong with factories, giving the reader a sense of urgency to record what remains.

The book is organized as a series of natural‑history sketches, moving from the weeds and alien plants that colonise the borders to detailed profiles of thrushes, robins, warblers, tits, waders and finches. Subsequent chapters catalogue the resident mammals, even the domestic dogs and cats that wander the garden paths, all illustrated with period photographs of the old church, yew, and two nests. With patient observation and a touch of personal reminiscence, the notes capture a summer world on the brink of change, inviting listeners to hear the rustle of leaves and the call of meadow birds as they once were.
