Description

At the start of the story a massive St. Bernard‑mix named Buck enjoys a lazy, pampered existence on a sunny California ranch. His comfortable world shatters when men seize him and ship him northward to the Yukon, where a feverish gold rush has created a desperate demand for sled dogs. The long, brutal voyage across the sea and the first days on the frozen trail thrust him into a realm of harsh law and fierce competition.

Thrown into a pack of seasoned sled dogs, Buck must quickly learn to obey, to fight, and to trust his own instincts. The novel follows his gradual awakening to the primal rhythms of the wild, as the call of the forest grows louder than the comforts of civilization. Through vivid descriptions of snow‑bound landscapes and the raw struggle for survival, the story explores themes of adaptability, loyalty, and the thin line between domestication and the ancient wild within us.
