HOW THE REDOUBT WAS TAKEN
A newly commissioned lieutenant joins his regiment on the eve of battle, entering a world where rank must be earned and courage is measured under fire. His hardened captain, scarred by past campaigns and openly doubtful of a college-trained newcomer, offers little welcome. Across the moonlit plain, the Russian redoubt of Cheverino looms like a dark volcanic peak, while an old soldier’s warning gives the young officer an ominous sense of what lies ahead.
Unable to sleep, he imagines wounds, surgeons, and dying far from anyone he knows. By afternoon, however, the army advances, artillery erupts, and the lieutenant discovers that the reality of combat is both more terrifying and more exhilarating than his youthful fantasies of glory. As shells burst around him and the regiment prepares to storm the fortified position, he must maintain a brave face before his skeptical captain and comrades. Told with vivid detail and dry, perceptive humor, this compact battlefield narrative captures the confusion, fear, and strange exhilaration of a soldier’s first engagement.

A sharp-eyed storyteller with a taste for mystery, passion, and the uncanny, Prosper Mérimée brought distant places and turbulent histories vividly to life. His novella Carmen inspired Bizet’s famous opera, while his work as a scholar and heritage official helped preserve France’s historic monuments.
