CHAPTER LIII. EIGHTH YEAR OF THE WAR.
After a fragile thirty‑year truce, Athens re‑asserted its dominance over the Aegean, turning the city into a maritime empire whose revenues swelled under Pericles’ leadership. Free allies such as Chios, Samos and Lesbos stood alongside older partners, while the rest paid tribute and accepted Athenian oversight. The period saw bold colonial ventures—Amphipolis in Thrace and Thurii in Italy—and a surge of personal ambition among citizens eager to share in the city’s prosperity.
Within Athens, fierce political rivalry simmered between Pericles and his opponents, culminating in the ostracism of Thucydides the elder. The era’s confidence found expression in grand architectural programs: the Long Walls, the newly laid‑out Piraeus, the Parthenon and the accompanying temples and statues crafted by masters like Phidias. Legal courts extended Athenian authority across the empire, offering both protection and control over allies and citizens alike.
Yet the outward glow masked growing strains. The Samian revolt and the budding discord between Corinth, Corcyra and the city of Epidamnus hinted at a widening split between the Athenian and Spartan blocs. As diplomatic talks faltered, the foundations were being laid for the larger conflict that would soon engulf the Greek world.
