Description

Through a richly illustrated narrative, this volume paints a panoramic view of the Iranian world as it burst onto the ancient stage. It begins with the enigmatic Median kingdom, the birth of Zoroastrian ideas, and the daring revolt of Cyrus that toppled his grandfather Astyages, setting the scene for the sweeping conquests of Lydia, Babylon, and Egypt. Along the way, readers meet legendary figures such as Cambyses, Darius, and the exiled Jews whose hopes of restoration echo through Ezekiel’s visions.

The second part turns to the empire’s remarkable bureaucracy, describing how satraps, royal secretaries, and a network of couriers kept the far‑flung territories under control. Detailed explanations of the daric tax, the fire‑altar cult, and the organized military give listeners a sense of why Persia could field armies that marched from the Hapta‑Hindu to the shores of Greece. All of this is brought to life by more than twelve hundred colored plates that illustrate temples, battles, and daily life across Egypt, Syria, and Mesopotamia.
