Description

In the early nineteenth century Central America teetered between loyalty to a distant Spanish throne and the stirrings of a new national identity. The volume captures the shock of Napoleon’s seizure of power, the ensuing panic across the colonies, and the clash between Creole elites who cherished Spanish culture and the growing desire for self‑rule. It also gives voice to educated indigenous leaders, whose reverence for the old order battles with a yearning for freedom.

The narrative walks listeners through the turbulent decades that followed, detailing popular unrest, half‑hearted reforms, and the rise and fall of figures such as Saravia and José Bustamante. Episodes of revolt in Salvador, the brutal campaigns in Nicaragua, conspiracies in Guatemala, and the constant tug‑of‑war between constitutional guarantees and royal decrees are presented with vivid contemporary accounts. By the close of the nineteenth century the region’s political landscape is laid bare, offering a nuanced picture of a continent in the making.
