In the heat of a summer evening in 1832, a massive cotton mill dominates the Ghent skyline, its endless rows of gears, belts and roaring steam engines turning the raw plant into fine thread. Inside, men, women and children move like shadows among the humming machinery, their lives entwined with the relentless rhythm of the factory that feeds both their wages and their fears. When the bell finally tolls, work stops, and the workers spill into the courtyard, waiting for the weekly pay that will sustain their families for another week.
Among the gathering, a hearty filier named Adrien stands out, his loud jokes lifting the spirits of his comrades even as the weight of hardship hangs over them. Nearby, the youngest of the workers—small, vulnerable children—watch the scene, their futures shaped by the same relentless wheels that have become the pulse of their world. The opening scenes capture the starkness of industrial life, the fragile hope of a community bound together by labor, and the quiet determination that drives them forward.
