In the crisp dawn of early December, a bustling courtyard in Soini comes alive with the clatter of harnesses and the smell of strong coffee and cheap whisky. A band of horse‑men, fresh from a market trip to Tampere and a night’s train ride to Oulu, are busy fitting new tack—gleaming black reins, tasselled surcingles, and sturdy carts—before setting out on the long road back toward their homes along the Tornionjoki. The atmosphere is a mix of camaraderie and careful preparation, as each rider tends to several horses, shovels away mud, and sharpens the tools that will carry them through the snow‑laden lanes.
At the centre of the gathering stands Ulrikheikki, a larger‑than‑life figure with a bright red cap and a sardonic grin. His imposing presence and keen eye command the respect of the younger men, especially the Lomma brothers who are still mastering the trade. As he inspects his own steeds and offers terse advice, a subtle tension hints at the competitive world of horse trading, where reputation can turn on a single well‑placed wager. The scene sets the stage for a vivid portrait of a bygone market life, full of hard work, humor, and the unspoken challenges that lie ahead.
