Description

Hetty Gunn, a thirty‑five‑year‑old woman alone at the helm of a sprawling Massachusetts estate, faces the village’s quiet pressure to find a husband after the death of her parents. The farm, known far and wide as “Gunn’s,” has been a family legacy since the Revolutionary era, and its stone house, barns and five hundred acres now rest in her careful hands. With no suitor in sight, she must decide whether to preserve her independence or conform to the expectations of a community that measures a woman’s worth by marriage.

The story is colored by memories of Hetty’s ailing grandfather, a one‑legged militia veteran whose booming laughter and stubborn humor still echo through the farm’s corridors. His rugged spirit and tales of battle shape Hetty’s resilient, good‑natured disposition, hinting at the inner strength she will need as she confronts the practical and emotional demands of running a great house alone. The novel gently explores themes of duty, legacy, and the quiet courage required to forge one’s own path.
