Description

Hetty Gunn inherits a sprawling New England farm after the sudden deaths of her parents, leaving her the sole keeper of a five‑hundred‑acre estate known throughout the county as “Gunn’s.” At thirty‑five, she faces the relentless gossip of a town that assumes marriage is the only solution to her solitary situation. The memory of her grandfather—a one‑legged Revolutionary veteran with a sharp wit—lives on in Hetty’s mind, shaping both her humor and her sense of duty.

As Hetty settles into the rhythm of managing barns, cattle, and the endless demands of the land, she wrestles with the weight of expectation versus her own yearning for independence. The narrative weaves her daily chores with moments of reflection on love, sacrifice, and the lingering echo of her grandfather’s stories. Listeners are drawn into a portrait of a resilient woman confronting the crossroads of tradition and self‑determination.

Helen Hunt Jackson

1830–1885

Remembered for vivid poems, popular fiction, and fierce moral conviction, this 19th-century American writer brought literary grace to one of the hardest political subjects of her time. Her work moves between intimate feeling and outspoken reform, especially in defense of Native American rights.
