Part 1
Part 2
In the midst of an air raid, Mort and his companion Judith scramble for safety, finding refuge in a concrete tunnel just as a bomb shatters the street above. Disoriented and bruised, they awaken to the faint glow of a distant light and the unsettling smell of ether, their senses dulled by the shock of the explosion. As they crawl toward the exit, two figures in vivid kilts and unfamiliar gas‑mask‑like devices appear, their strange lanterns cutting through the darkness and beckoning the pair forward.
When they finally emerge, the familiar skyline has been replaced by an impossibly altered landscape—marble government buildings and familiar mansions have vanished, giving way to a vast park of towering, ancient elms. Both Mort and Judith share the same bewildering vision, hinting that something far beyond a simple raid has reshaped their world. The story teeters between wartime desperation and an uncanny, almost dream‑like mystery, inviting listeners to wonder what lies beyond the shattered cityscape.

1896–1982
A poet-turned-storyteller, this early science fiction writer brought satire, social criticism, and a distinctly literary voice to pulp-era adventures. His work moved easily between verse and speculative fiction, giving even far-future tales an old-school, thoughtful feel.
