In a Rome where the roar of the arena has shifted from blood‑soaked spectacles to the thunder of chariot wheels, a young Christian scholar named Valentinian watches the scarlet‑bedecked horses parade past the Colosseum’s ancient stones. Though the empire’s cruelty toward believers has waned, the memory of martyrs lingers, and Valentinian feels a quiet shame at the cheering crowds. He owns a magnificent warhorse, Carus, whose past battles in Britain have earned it a reputation that even the city’s racing factions admire. When his mother, Placidia, retreats to a summer villa, the boy splits his time between studies in the capital and evening rides that let him drape garlands over his faithful companion.
Rufus, a persuasive friend, sees the upcoming races as a chance to draw Valentinian into the sport, praising Carus and hinting at the honor and excitement that await. Yet Valentinian wrestles with conflicting loyalties—to his faith, to his family’s expectations, and to the lure of victory. The story follows his uneasy walk along that tightrope, setting the stage for a choice that could reshape his future.
