A school‑house crowns a wind‑blown hill in a New England village, its stove barely keeping the winter chill at bay. Mr. Chalker, the witty school‑master, spies the frozen mill‑pond and hatches a plan to give his restless pupils a break from the icy desks. He persuades three boys to trade their benches for a spontaneous ice‑fishing outing, promising the thrill of an old‑time pickerel hunt.
The boys haul a sled of firewood down the slope, sliding over a slick curve before the sled crashes into a drift, sending Mr. Chalker into the powder with a booming laugh. Undaunted, they cut holes in the ice, pile a roaring fire on a makeshift platform, and watch its orange glow dance across the frozen surface. Gathered around the heat, the children discover that a simple, unexpected adventure can melt even the coldest morning into warm camaraderie.
