THE OLD MILL.
In a sleepy town, a handful of enterprising boys decide to stage a one‑day circus, cobbling together cages, borrowing cages, and dreaming of oddities to amaze their neighbors. Their plans hinge on a ragged tent, a few farm animals, and a nervous but eager crowd of friends like Bob, Reddy, and the ever‑watchful Mr. Stubbs’s brother. While they snack on Aunt Olive’s fresh doughnuts, the boys argue over who will keep watch, oblivious to the trouble brewing in the pen. The atmosphere crackles with the same mix of excitement and teenage mischief that makes any backyard project feel grand.
The festivities unravel the moment a torn bag releases a cat that leaps onto a calf, sending the animals scattering and the canvas tearing wide open. Amid the pandemonium—squirrels darting, a crowing hen writhing in Mr. Stubbs’s brother’s grasp—Toby steadies himself and snatches the beleaguered hen, while the rest of the boys scramble to round up the escaped menagerie. The mayhem leaves the makeshift circus in tatters, but the boys’ determination and quick‑thinking hint that their adventure is only just beginning.
