Description

In this lively chapter, a group of adventurous boys set their sights on launching a makeshift circus, and their biggest challenge turns out to be a scrappy pony they’ve borrowed from a neighbour. The animal, half‑size and badly feather‑mouthed from years of rough use, declares its independence by kicking, bucking, and even trying to bite anyone who dares to lead it. As the youngsters scramble to tame the willful creature, their plans wobble between comic chaos and earnest determination.

Bob, the self‑appointed ring‑master, clings to the halter while his friends—Toby, Joe, and Reddy—debate who should ride or restrain the beast. Their banter reveals a mix of youthful bravado and underlying fear, especially when the pony launches a sudden plunge that sends them scattering into the shade of alder bushes. The scene captures the thin line between fun and danger when a child’s imagination meets an uncooperative animal.
