Description

A small block‑house fort on the edge of the Indiana wilderness wakes to a bright spring dawn. Settlers who arrived from Virginia the previous autumn are busy clearing fields, felling trees and dreaming of future orchards and grain farms. The rhythm of labor is punctuated by simple meals of johnny‑cake, dried venison and maple‑sweetened corn coffee, while mist rolls over the Big Blue River and the hills loom like islands in a green sea.

At the heart of the settlement are John Martin, a sturdy twenty‑five‑year‑old, his teenage wife Mary, and the boy Stephen, the only child who never knew his Revolutionary‑war father. Their conversation drifts between the optimism of a growing community and a quiet anxiety about unseen dangers beyond the trees. As they set out with rifle and axe, the story captures the mix of hard work, familial affection, and the frontier’s lingering sense of uncertainty.
