A brisk Easter Monday finds the young Jack Howard perched on the front handle‑bars of the Arrow, a gleaming four‑person racing quad built for speed. When Colonel Howard hands his son a desperate dispatch, the boys plunge down a smooth, track‑like wood road, their pedals thudding in perfect rhythm as they race against time. The ride is a blur of wind, clattering gears and the occasional jolt from hidden stones, demanding every rider’s focus to keep the machine steady.
Just as they near a gate, the Arrow is halted by an unexpected barricade and a volley of rifle fire. A sergeant and his men step out from the shadowed slope, turning the playful skirmish into a sudden capture. The encounter is handled with a mix of good‑natured humor and military formality, leaving Jack and his crew to wonder how their father’s confidence will turn the tide. The opening sets a vivid picture of late‑nineteenth‑century sport, friendship, and the thin line between game and danger.
