A warm midsummer evening settles over a quiet parish, its golden light spilling onto an ancient chapel by a still pond. Inside, the aging pastor, weary from years of solitary duty, worries about his only child, the lively seventeen‑year‑old Hanna, whose vibrant spirit and bright eyes set her apart from other village girls. As the festival approaches, Hanna hums with anticipation, dreaming of the simple joys and the possibility of a future beyond the modest walls of the manor.
When a well‑dressed gentleman from the nearby estate arrives, his confident swagger draws curious glances from the townsfolk and stirs a ripple of excitement among the young women. He offers Hanna a glimpse of a world filled with fine fabrics and elegant gatherings, tempting her with promises of a different life. Yet the pastor’s cautious counsel and the lingering presence of older, wiser faces remind her that love and duty often walk a delicate line, leaving her to weigh the allure of novelty against the comfort of home.
