Description

A small gathering in the governor’s garden turns into a delicate chess match of status and ambition. Lady Eynesford, her sister‑in‑law Alicia, and a handful of well‑tethered gentlemen debate who should step into the vacant post left by Sir Robert Perry, weighing the merits of the respectable but enigmatic Mr. Medland against the more predictable Mr. Puttock and Mr. Coxon. Their conversation is peppered with polite intrigue, the hidden anxieties of a colony’s administration, and the ever‑present whisper of scandal.

The governor himself listens from an easy‑chair, cigar in hand, as the table’s banter skirts around private rumors and the uncertain future of his own household. The characters navigate the fine line between public duty and personal reputation, hinting at a past love and a reputation for nocturnal indulgence that could complicate any appointment. As the evening wanes, the decisions made in that garden will ripple through the colony’s political landscape, promising a series of maneuvers that test loyalty, ambition, and the thin veneer of propriety.
